Fish Cultivation System in Indonesia and Its Supporting Infrastructure

Table of Contents

In cultivating fish, there are several things you should know. One of them is understanding what are the types of fish farming systems. There are at least three kinds of systems in fish farming that are commonly used. What are they?

Types of Fish Cultivation Systems

Here are several types of systems for cultivating fish that you can apply:

1. Traditional or Extensive Systems

The shape and size tend to be irregular with an area of between 3 ha and 10 ha per plot.
Generally each plot has a caren or canal around. In this system, it will grow as a natural food for fish / already cultivated.

In this system, initially the ponds are not given fertilizer so that productivity only depends on natural feed which of course depends on natural fertility.
Pest eradication was also not carried out, so that many of the seeds that were maintained were lost or even died, and resulted in lower productivity.

2. Semi-Intensive Cultivation

This system is an improvement from the previous system by forming more regular plots with the aim of facilitating water management. The plots are usually rectangular in shape with an area of 1-3 ha per plot.
Each plot also has separate inlets and outlets for water replacement needs, pool preparation before the seeds are sown, and of course harvesting.

Kelekap is a mixture of various kinds of microorganisms that grow at the bottom of the pond.
In this system, water quality is sufficiently maintained in cases of rising tides, then some of the pond water will be replaced with new water. Likewise, pest eradication is carried out at the time of preparation prior to seed dispersal and pest attacks are also prevented by having a filter system at the water gates.

3. Types of Intensive Fish Culture Systems

This system is a system with sophisticated techniques and costs are quite high as well. To compensate, the production volume can also be increased.
The plots for this system tend to be small with a size of 0.2-0.5 ha per plot, aiming to facilitate water management and monitoring.
For plotters can use concrete, soil, or a combination of both.

Feed completely depends on feed whose composition is ideal for fish/farmed animals.
This system also uses a wheel or other device to increase the oxygen level in the water and performs regular water changes.

Supporting Infrastructure for Fish Cultivation Systems

After understanding the cultivation system, you also have to know what the supporting infrastructure is. One such infrastructure is cages. There are several types of marine cages or floating net cages that are commonly used.

1. Cages made of wood

In general, cages that are often used as infrastructure in fish farming systems are wooden cages. As the name implies, these cages are made of wood which usually comes from the forest around the river.

Usually people use Rengas and Bedaru wood. The reason is because making cages from one of these materials tends to make cages last longer. Not only that, the raw materials for Bedru and Rengas are also easier to find.

Apart from these two types of wood, the community also has other alternatives in making cages. The material they use is simpur wood. All of these types of wood are also more durable when you soak them in water.

2. Plastic Cage

Another material for making cages is plastic. The advantage of using this material is that it is easy to disassemble if something dangerous happens later. This is an alternative to using wood as a material for cages, which can extend the life of cages and minimize maintenance costs. The cages that you have will look much neater and more attractive, and access for farmers to control them will be much easier and safer.

That's some information about the types of fish farming systems and also the supporting infrastructure in the form of KJA. Approximately, which cultivation system do you plan to use?
